Overview
What is Wegovy and how does it work?
Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss injection containing the active ingredient semaglutide, developed specifically for weight management and licensed in the UK for eligible adults. It comes as a once-weekly pre-filled pen that you self-inject, and is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist – it mimics the natural gut hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. By acting on appetite-control centres in the brain and slowing how quickly food leaves the stomach, it helps you feel fuller for longer, reduce cravings and lower your overall calorie intake.
How much weight could I lose?
In the STEP trials, the standard 2.4mg maintenance dose produced average weight loss of around 15–17% over 68 weeks, alongside diet and exercise. The newer higher 7.2mg dose (MHRA-approved in January 2026) showed greater average weight loss — around 20.7% over 72 weeks in the STEP UP trial — for patients who have titrated up and need an additional step. These are trial averages; individual results vary and weight loss is not guaranteed.

Eligibility
Who may be suitable for Wegovy?
Wegovy may be prescribed for weight management in adults who meet the clinical criteria. You may be eligible if:
- You are aged 18 or over
- Your BMI is 30 or above, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea)
- You do not have a medical condition or medicine that makes Wegovy unsafe for you
- You are not pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy
Who should not take Wegovy
Wegovy must not be used if you are allergic to semaglutide or any ingredient, are pregnant/breastfeeding/planning pregnancy, or are under 18. It may also not be suitable — and needs prescriber review – if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease or gastroparesis, significant liver or kidney disease, are using another GLP-1 medicine, take insulin or a sulfonylurea, or have a history of severe depression or suicidal thoughts. A prescriber must review your full history before deciding whether treatment is appropriate. Treatment is never approved automatically.

Wegovy follows a gradual dose-escalation schedule to help reduce side effects. You start low and increase roughly every 4 weeks, only if the previous dose is tolerated and further weight loss is needed.

Many patients settle on 1.7mg or 2.4mg as maintenance; the 7.2mg dose is an additional step for those who have titrated up and need more. Never increase your dose sooner than directed (usually no faster than every 4 weeks). Inject once weekly on the same day, with or without food, rotating the injection site (abdomen, thigh or upper arm) and avoiding within 5cm of the navel. Store unused pens in the fridge (2–8°C); a pen in use can be kept at room temperature. Dispose of pens and needles in the sharps bin provided.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it within 4 days (96 hours). If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take your next dose on the usual day. Never take two doses in the same week.

Safety
Side effects and safety
Like all medicines, Wegovy can cause side effects. For most people these are mild to moderate and improve as the body adjusts. The most common are digestive symptoms, especially when starting or increasing the dose.
Common
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion, stomach discomfort, reduced appetite, dizziness, fatigue, injection-site reactions, and possible hair thinning during rapid weight loss.
Less common / serious
Gallstones, increased heart rate, low blood sugar (if combined with insulin or sulfonylureas), and — rarely — pancreatitis or a serious allergic reaction.

Do not use Wegovy in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Use effective contraception during treatment, and stop Wegovy at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy, as semaglutide stays in the body for several weeks.

2. Prescriber review
A UK pharmacist independent prescriber reviews your answers, may confirm details with you, and decides whether treatment is clinically appropriate. No charge if we cannot prescribe.
3. Dispensing & delivery
If approved, we dispense from UK stock and ship in tracked, temperature-controlled packaging, including needles, a sharps bin and the Patient Information Leaflet.
4. Aftercare
Ongoing support with dose changes, side-effect advice, monitoring and reviews. With your consent, we can share a summary with your NHS GP for joined-up care.
NHS availability
Can I get Wegovy on the NHS?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is available on the NHS for weight management, but only through specialist weight management services and only for patients who meet strict criteria, usually following a GP referral. Access depends on local service availability and waiting lists.
Because NHS access is limited and referral-based, many people who are eligible choose to access Wegovy privately through a regulated service such as ours, after a clinical assessment. If you are unsure which route is right for you, your GP or our prescriber can help you decide.

What is the new Wegovy 7.2mg dose?

What are the main side effects?
Most commonly digestive symptoms — nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation — especially when starting or increasing the dose. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis and allergic reactions.
