What are Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used for weight loss and weight management in eligible adults. Unlike the Wegovy injection, the tablet form is taken by mouth once daily.

Semaglutide works by acting on appetite-regulating areas of the brain. It can help reduce hunger, improve fullness and support reduced calorie intake when used alongside a healthier diet, increased physical activity and regular clinical review.

Wegovy tablets are prescription-only. At Live Well Weight Loss, treatment is only supplied after an online consultation has been reviewed by a UK pharmacist prescriber.

Who may be suitable for Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets are prescription-only. At Live Well Weight Loss, treatment is only supplied after an online consultation has been reviewed by a UK pharmacist prescriber.

Your BMI is 30 or above
Your BMI is between 27 and 30 and you have a weight-related health condition
You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
You are not using another GLP-1 medicine at the same time
Your medical history and current medicines are suitable after prescriber review

Weight-related conditions may include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or other relevant conditions.

Treatment is not automatically approved. A prescriber must check your medical history, current medicines, BMI, treatment history and safety information before deciding whether Wegovy tablets are appropriate.

Taking it correctly

How do you take Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets must be taken correctly because food, drink and other medicines can affect how the medicine is absorbed.

Once-daily routine

Take one tablet after fasting for at least 8 hours – usually first thing in the morning.

Use water only

Swallow the tablet whole with up to 120ml of plain water. Do not crush, chew, cut or dissolve it.

Wait 30 minutes

Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines.

Important: Do not take more than one Wegovy tablet per day. If you miss a dose, do not double up – skip it and take your next dose the following day. Always follow the instructions given by your prescriber and the Patient Information Leaflet.

Wegovy tablet dose schedule

Wegovy tablets are increased gradually to help reduce side effects. Each dose level is usually taken for at least one month before increasing, under prescriber supervision.

Your prescriber may keep you on a dose for longer if you are experiencing side effects or if it is clinically appropriate. Do not increase your dose unless instructed to do so.

Patients already using the Wegovy 2.4mg weekly injection privately may be assessed for transition to Wegovy 25mg tablets once daily, where clinically appropriate. The tablet is usually started one week after the last injection, under prescriber supervision.

Safety

Possible side effects of Wegovy tablets

Like all medicines, Wegovy tablets can cause side effects. The most common are digestive symptoms, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose.

Common side effects may include:

Most side effects are mild to moderate and may settle as your body adjusts. You should contact a healthcare professional if side effects are severe, persistent or worrying.

Before any operation or sedation: tell your surgeon, anaesthetist or endoscopy team that you are taking semaglutide. It can slow stomach emptying, which may matter for procedures involving general anaesthesia or deep sedation.

Seek urgent medical help if you develop severe, persistent abdominal pain (a possible sign of pancreatitis), a sudden change in vision (including partial loss of vision), symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, signs of dehydration, or any symptoms that feel severe or unusual.

Safety

Contraindications with Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets may not be suitable if you:

Are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
Are under 18
Are allergic to semaglutide or any ingredient in the medicine
Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer
Have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2

Have a history of pancreatitis
Have severe stomach or gut problems
Are already using another GLP-1 medicine
Take medicines where timing or absorption may be affected
Have certain kidney, liver, diabetic eye or mental health concerns that require further review

Pregnancy & contraception: Wegovy tablets must not be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you could become pregnant, use effective contraception while taking them, and stop treatment at least 2 months before any planned pregnancy, as the medicine stays in the body for several weeks.

Are Wegovy tablets the same as Wegovy injections?

Both contain semaglutide, but they are taken differently. Wegovy tablets are taken once daily by mouth. Wegovy injections are taken once weekly under the skin.

How do I take Wegovy tablets?

Do not take two tablets to make up for a missed dose. Skip the missed dose and take your next dose the following day. Follow the advice in the Patient Information Leaflet and contact the pharmacy team if unsure.

Do Wegovy tablets have side effects?
