What is Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy 7.2mg is a higher weekly dose of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy. Semaglutide belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines help regulate appetite, increase feelings of fullness, and support reduced calorie intake.

Wegovy is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight management. It is a prescription-only medicine and must be assessed by a qualified prescriber before supply.

The 7.2mg dose is the highest Wegovy dose approved for adult obesity treatment in the UK. It is intended for selected patients who may need additional support after reaching the usual 2.4mg maintenance dose.

Who may Wegovy 7.2mg be suitable for?

Wegovy 7.2mg may be considered for adults with obesity where a prescriber decides that a higher maintenance dose is clinically appropriate.

It is not suitable for every patient using Wegovy. Before considering 7.2mg, a prescriber would usually review:

• Current BMI and weight loss progress
• How long the patient has been using Wegovy
• Whether the patient has already reached 2.4mg once weekly
• Side effects and tolerability
• Medical history and risk factors
• Other medicines, especially diabetes medicines or blood thinners
• Whether continuing, changing, or stopping treatment is appropriate

How does Wegovy 7.2mg fit into the dosing schedule?

Wegovy treatment normally starts with a low dose and increases gradually. This is done to help reduce the chance of gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal pain.

Standard Wegovy dose escalation

According to the Wegovy dosing guidance, the dose may be increased to 7.2mg once weekly for obesity after at least 4 weeks on 2.4mg, if clinically appropriate.

What type of pen is used for Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy 7.2mg is available as a single-dose prefilled pen. This means each pen contains one weekly dose and is used once only.

This is different from the Wegovy FlexTouch pens used for lower doses such as 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. The FlexTouch pens contain multiple doses, whereas the 7.2mg single-dose pen contains one preset dose.

Before using the 7.2mg pen

• Check the medicine name and strength on the pen.
• Check the expiry date.
• Check that the solution is clear and colourless.
• Do not use the pen if it is damaged, cloudy, discoloured, frozen, or expired.

How Wegovy is injected

• Abdomen, avoiding a 5cm area around the belly button
• Front of the thighs
• Upper arms

You can use the same general body area each week, but you should avoid injecting into exactly the same spot repeatedly.

• Dizziness
• Injection site reactions

• Low blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes using insulin or sulfonylureas

Tips to reduce nausea

• Eat smaller meals.
• Stop eating when full.
• Avoid greasy, fried, spicy, or very rich foods.
• Take small sips of water or a cool drink.
• Avoid strong food smells if they worsen nausea.
• Avoid rushing meals or eating large portions late at night.

When to seek urgent medical advice

You should seek urgent medical help if you experience:

• Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it spreads to the back
• Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, especially if you cannot keep fluids down
• Signs of dehydration, such as dizziness, confusion, very dark urine, or reduced urination
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, or widespread rash
• Sudden changes in vision or sudden loss of vision
• Symptoms of gallbladder problems, such as severe right-sided upper abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, or pale stools

Who should not use Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy may not be suitable if you:

• Are allergic to semaglutide or any ingredient in Wegovy
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have severe stomach emptying problems, such as severe gastroparesis
• Have a history of pancreatitis, unless carefully assessed by a prescriber
• Are using another GLP-1 medicine
• Have type 2 diabetes and are using insulin or sulfonylureas, unless your diabetes treatment is reviewed
• Are taking warfarin or similar blood thinners, as extra INR monitoring may be needed

Women of childbearing potential should use contraception while using semaglutide. Wegovy should usually be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy because semaglutide remains in the body for a long time.

What if you miss a Wegovy 7.2mg dose?

The missed dose advice for Wegovy is based on the 5-day rule:

• If it has been 5 days or less since the missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then take your next dose on your usual scheduled day.
• If it has been more than 5 days since the missed dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your normal scheduled day.
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

If you have missed multiple doses, speak to your prescriber before restarting. You may need to restart at a lower dose to reduce the risk of side effects.

How to store Wegovy 7.2mg

Correct storage is important because Wegovy can be affected by temperature and light.

Storage before use

• Store Wegovy in a fridge between 2°C and 8°C.
• Keep it away from the cooling element.
• Do not freeze it.
• Do not use Wegovy if it has been frozen.
• Keep the pen in the original carton to protect it from light.
• Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.

Storage outside the fridge

The Wegovy single-dose prefilled pen may be stored unrefrigerated for a limited period, provided it is kept below the recommended maximum temperature. Always follow the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine and ask your pharmacy if you are unsure.

Disposal

• Do not reuse a single-dose Wegovy pen.
• Dispose of used pens safely as advised by your pharmacy or local authority.
• Do not place loose needles or sharps into household waste.
• Keep sharps disposal containers away from children.
